Open Question: Which engine is right for me?

29 July 2010, 11:29 pm

Which engine is right for me? Hi, How do you determine which car engine is most appropriate these days? Engines seem far better these days and it seems that lower engine sizes are as good as previous larger engines on older cars. I do approximately 25,000 miles a year, currently drive a 1.9 diesal but am looking to replace it with a Toyota IQ but am stuck on the engine. Would a 1.0 be sufficient or a 1.33? Number wise the 1.0 beats my current 1.9 on BHP, MPG, 0-60 and is cheaper than the 1.33 but want ensure i get it right. How do you decide on engine suitability? Hi, Insurance on the new car is cheaper, the MPG is higher on the new ones too. I currently get about 36-40 on the diesal (Renualt Megane '96 1.9), the new ones should be 58.9 for the 1.33 and 65.7 for the 1.0. The 1.0 is expempt from road tax, the 1.33 is £30, currently my big diesal is around £100 for 6 months. What i save in running costs should pay for the new car alone, just unsure how you decide what engine is suitable for my usage. When i was younger 1.0 cars were joke cars, 1.3 were your average town/casual and 1.6's were your motorway cars but engines seem far better today. I dont mind it being a car specific question but thought there might be some useful rule of thumb principles. My old head says the 1.33 cause its bigger, but stat wise the 1.0 (68BHP) beats my current car which is 65BHP, 0-60 13.6s against 17.3s, both get over 90MPH although i rarely go above 80MPH anyway. Yes, its mostly A roads/fast roads Just unsure how you determine what engine is sufficient.... Read More »
